Bio

Vince Law is a former Accountancy graduate from Singapore Management University, who recently transitioned from a Big 4 auditor into a software engineer, focusing on payments and investments in the banking industry.

He also works as a freelance writer who loves challenging mainstream views on current affairs and is a strong advocate of mental health and personal development.

As someone who is skeptical about personal development, the idea of self improvement has never struck a chord with me. Limiting beliefs and the fears within me were pushing myself deeper into a rut.

In 2006, I found myself being severely overweight, which I could hardly recognize myself in the mirror. Besides feeling depressed and hopeless, I was a star patron at the Trim and Fit (“TAF”) club.  In a club full of overweight students, I couldn’t help but felt demoralized.

Often criticized as the “fatty bom bom” in my class, I was a noticeable kid that bullies love to be around with. Being uncomfortable with my then state, my world never felt settled or out challenged by my own beliefs.

At the tender age of 12, I was convinced that if I want to change my reality, I would have to change something in me. Coincidentally, that was when I discovered self-improvement books, where majority of them talked about how one’s mindset determines the outcome of the problem.

As much as I enjoyed reading those books, taking the first step of accepting change had never felt so difficult, yet liberating. With the little grit in me, I stayed committed to my daily exercise routine and lost a whooping 25kg as a result. Having regained my confidence, I managed to get my life together and enjoyed that little win for a while.

Being one who enjoys science and design, my interests led me to pursuing Civil Engineering at Singapore Polytechnic (“SP”) in 2011. While enjoying the school curriculum and academic side of things, I always thought having a stable career in the built-environment industry.

Despite working hard to securing a undergraduate spot at Nanyang Technological University (“NTU”), I didn’t pursue it as I felt I was not a good fit for it over the course of several industrial attachments I undertook with some of the most established firms.

Having a new-found interest in the accounting industry, I furthered my undergraduate studies at Singapore Management University (“SMU”), majoring in Accountancy and Finance in 2017. Given the competitive environment being in one of the six autonomous universities in Singapore, it gave me plenty of opportunities to assess my career options, which I actively assumed leadership roles and contributed as a community member in various school clubs.

However, an unforeseen pandemic hit the entire globe with a storm, which led many in periodical burnouts and that included me in the equation.

Staying resilient and optimistic became my two pills of reliance and helped me overcome countless episodes of anxiety attacks and burnouts. Eventually, I was plunged into a crazy job market with heavy emphasis on technological advancement, and I was fortunate enough to secure an auditing role with one of the Big 4 accounting firms.

While my accounting career was short-lived, the invaluable experiences and connections were insurmountable, which helped me to transition into a technology-related role, furthering my interests in software development as a software engineer.

As I reminisced to my years of personal growth, my life was not set out for me to walk in a straight line but in circles. It has never been settling or concrete enough for me to tell anyone that I have finally figured my life, yet I have never felt so grateful that I was courageous enough to pick myself up whenever I was hit with a set back.

Why do I want to start this blog?

With this small channel, I want to share my life experience and reach out to anyone who is feeling uninspired, unmotivated, and even procrastinating to achieve their goals.

If I can help one person to get their life together, I would have already achieved my goal.

I hope I can reach out to as many readers through my tiny voice and keep this positive energy going!

If you like my posts, appreciate if you can buy me a coffee 🙂
